classic we're placing more of an emphasis on how the book is regarded rather than the year of publication we're also only considering couples who actually got together at some point number 10 Beatrice and Benedick much ado about nothing while some other couples from Shakespeare will undoubtedly be appearing later on our list this more lighthearted duo definitely deserves a spot are you yet living is it possible disdain should die while she had such meat food to feed it to senior Benedick appearing in the comedy much ado about nothing Benedick and Beatrice actually have a refreshingly modern romance for a work penned in the late 16th century love you so much protest it's a classic will they or won't they dynamic with the two characters seeming to alternate between being interested in one another and hating each other from scene to scene in the end though they reveal their feelings and it's oh so satisfying after the long back-and-forth for which of my bad pasta first fallen for them all together number nine Iowan and Faramir the Lord of the Rings if you've only seen the Lord of the Rings movies and haven't read the books you'd probably cite Aragorn and Arwen as the most prominent romantic couple of the series in the novel however their story is mainly relegated to the appendices and hardly appears in the main text one romantic storyline that j.r.r tolkien actually did right into the main story was that of a Owen and Faramir I do not believe this darkness my dear though Aon previously had a thing for Aragorn it's clear that her relationship with Faramir is far richer and deeper than the infatuation she felt for Aragorn number eight Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza love in the Time of Cholera you have waited for this opportunity for 51 years nine months and four days that is how long I have loved you from the first moment that I saw anyone until now perhaps the most well loved book by Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez love in the Time of Cholera is at its very heart a love story in this beautifully lyrical novel Romina and Florentino enjoy a passionate romance in their youth but are kept apart by circumstances for much of their lives and in fact spend most of the story apart Fermina even marries a man she does not initially love and Florentino experiences many Affairs in the end though after enduring many years without one another they come together again to finish the inevitable love they began that continues to burn though they are old and gray Oh number seven Penelope and Odysseus Odyssey promised mule return these to go to show that true love really is worth the wait The Odyssey an epic poem by Homer composed sometime in the 8th century BCE it's considered one of the seminal works of Western literature though it's a story of adventure it also features an enviable love story though Odysseus and Penelope are separated for most of the long tale they both remain devoted to one another Odysseus must battle the divine forces that keep him away from his beloved no flesh could ever make me forget Penelope back at home Penelope has to continue to keep at bay 108 suitors who try to take her husband's place when he's presumed dead number six countess Anna arkadyevna Karenina and count Alexei kitty Levitch Vronsky Anna Karenina you know this I have come to be where you are this story may be known for ending in tragedy but that doesn't mean it doesn't contain a great romance in Anna Karenina one of the best-known works of Russian literature Anna is a woman in a loveless marriage who has an affair with Vronsky the man she truly loves because of the social pressures of the time leaving her husband is no easy task so infidelity is the only option she's left with if she seeks to find her own happiness they may not get their happily ever after but their story and love touch every generation of new readers making their romance truly timeless number five Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler Gone with the Wind your secret is safe with me so you want no gentleman and you miss are no lady like many of the other couples on our list there was no easy road to happiness for these two in what seems to be a common theme with great literary romances Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler alternated between love and animosity for much of their long story although unique kissing valley that's what's wrong with you you should be kissed and often and by someone who knows how I suppose you think you are the proper person though they may not have always seemed meant to be the old and movable object versus irresistible force situation applies to them in spades and makes their tortured relationship impossible to ignore even though they're ending is left up in the air the sheer emotion in their tempestuous pairing pushes buttons and readers who have had or wish they'd had similar relationships themselves frankly my hair I don't give it am number four Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester Jane Eyre okay so by modern standards there are quite a lot of things wrong with this story but it's still considered one of literature's great romances is an orphan working in the home Edward Rochester while her employer is at first mean and abusive towards her she eventually comes to see his softer side of a strange feeling with regard to you as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs tightly knotted to similar string in you these unlikely lovers are in fact soulmates the problem which she discovers on their wedding day is that he already has a wife don't worry though she ends up being killed in a fire so they can be together guilt-free messed up maybe but that doesn't mean readers don't love this love story number three catherine earnshaw and heathcliff weathering Heights even death cannot bring this great gothic romance to an end Catherine and Heathcliff have a tumultuous relationship that spans their entire lives starting out as childhood sweethearts but getting more and more complicated as they get older my life has been better since I last heard your voice I kept going only for you their love transcends their different classes a world of violence and abuse and yes even death catherine is eventually married to someone else and dies giving birth to her daughter but that doesn't stop Heathcliff from longing for her and Catherine's ghost from visiting him no a dark story it's one with love at it's very heart even if that love is sometimes twisted number two Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague Romeo and Juliet no list of great romantic pairings would be complete without these two we of course know how this tragic story ends but the intense drama of Romeo and Juliet makes it one of the greatest love stories of any age only teenagers when they meet and barely knowing one another for a few days before the story concludes their love is one that represents youthful passion and folly wherefore out thou Romeo deny thy father and refuse thy name recognizing that they were meant to live together or not at all they are willing to end their lives for one another and hey is there anything more romantic than that okay maybe there is but as far as Shakespeare goes it makes for one seriously epic romance number one Elizabeth Bennet and mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy Pride and Prejudice while many of the entries on this list featured darker stories this one has a classic happy ending and is a good thing too because readers of Jane Austen's most popular work Pride and Prejudice may not have thought that the male and female lead could possibly have worked things out based on how their relationship began her sister Elizabeth is very agreeable thoroughly tolerable Elizabeth Bennet has contemporary feminist views and doesn't want to end up in a loveless arranged marriage like many of the women around her unfortunately she totally miss reads the character of mr. Darcy whose sterling qualities are exactly those she seeks and I'm not wonder why with so evident a desire to offend and insult me you chose to tell me that you like me against your will it's your reason and even against your character that she comes to recognize those qualities ensures a joyous conclusion for this perfect company of manners you have bewitched me body and soul and I love and a voice to be parted from you from this day on do you agree with our picks check out these other great clips from is mojo and subscribe for new videos every day you

  1. Ugh. I struggle with "iconic" of some of these couples. Because I would NOT want to model my relationship after some of these haha

  2. While they definitely shouldn’t be considered “couple goals”, Heathcliff and Cathy are my favorite. Not only because Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite novels, but because their relationship is fascinating. Tragic, toxic and complex.

Also, I’m lowkey disappointed not to see Gatsby and Daisy on the list.

  3. Great list and I love all the couples mentioned but I think Anne and Gilbert should've been mentioned as well. They're one of my favorite books couples.

  4. How about Prince Charming and Cinderella? It was written by the Grimm brothers so it's technically classic literature.

  5. What issues are there with Jane Eyre? It’s my favorite book. Missing are Anne & Captain Wentworth, Bathsheba & Gabriel, Emma & Mr Knightley, Anne & Gilbert

  6. #9 OK, OK, OK… I didn't spect to find it in this top! What a nice surprise! I loved how it happened in the book!
#6 What? How is it there is an Anna Karenina movie with Sean Bean and I didn't know about it?
#5 also known as "don't know what you got 'till it's gone"
#3 The whole book gets me stressed… the good way! (?)
#1 Yeeeeeeesss! Nothing else to say.

  7. I love that Benedick & Beatrice made the list! I think they're my favorite Shakespeare couple… maybe.
But am I the only one who is just over Romeo and Juliet? They're stupid, young teenagers who took things too seriously and too far. Total soap opera. Great lines…but would be far more romantic if they were older.

  8. Anne Elliot & Captain Wentworth, Tristan & Isolde, Helen & Paris, Lucy Honeychurch & George Emerson, Scheherazade & Shahryar…

  9. Where are the second Mrs. De Winter and Maxim? I mean, I know they aren’t an ideal couple (y’know, the months of miscommunication and poor mental health on both sides) but by the end of the book, it was clear they loved each other and they supported each other.

  10. For a second there I thought that Romeo and Juliet were going to be number one, but thank God they didn't. I'm sorry, but those two horny teenagers can't surpass Mr Darcy 💁

  11. What about North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell? Margaret and Thornton more than deserved a place (or at least an honourable mention) on this list. They are just as good, if not better, than Elizabeth and Darcy.

  12. hate to be one of those girls but Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books of all time <3

  13. Elizabeth and Darcy and Jane & Mr. Rochester are my favorite couples ever!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  14. I am so happy that Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy is number 1. I've always loved "Pride and Prejudice" and "Persuasion".

  15. Catherine and Heathcliffe: iconic? yes. a love story? absolutely not that story is about obsessive love turned to hate

  16. I remember when my high school did an abridged presentation of "Much Ado About Nothing". I got to perform as Don Pedro and I remember having a blast being in a Shakespeare play.

  17. I dont know who made this list, but someone needs to read Anne of Green Gables and realise that there is no greater love then that of Gilbert and Anne. Nobody comes close.

  18. yay finally so acknowledges eowyn and faramirs lovestory <3
I just wished they would have cited more from the book

  19. Beatrice and Benedick, really?? I thought I was the only one that shipped these two. But anyway, if you actually study Odyssey, you know Ulysses' relationship with his wife is not actually 'romantic'

  20. Scarlett and Rhet are my all time favourite fictional couple. And if anyone disagree? Well, frankly my dear I don’t give a damn.

  21. Please do top ten instrumental songs from dream works movies I love the ones from How to train your dragon!
