Poet Joy Harjo on Being a Mystic | SuperSoul Sunday | Oprah Winfrey Network

-World Literature Today Magazine called you a seer and a mystic. How would you describe that? Would you say that is true for you? You are a seer and a mystic? -I would say that poets generally are. -Mhm. -That it is the path of being a poet. I mean, when I took on this path, and it really is a path, it means okay, if you’re going to be a poet, and– and this I’ve learned along the way, I didn’t have all of this right upfront, is that you have to learn how to listen. Well what does learning how to listen mean? It means listening beyond– Listening in to the challenge. Listening in to the pain of someone who would destroy you. Listening in to the pain of your people and the atrocities that have been perpetrated against Native peoples and against African Americans, against– listening into all of this that makes this story.
