Author websites and email marketing for selling books (ADVANCED)

earlier today I gave a presentation on marketing for authors especially building your author platform and how to sell books without talking to people I made it most the way through my slides at least I got the bulk of the main thesis of the information but I didn't really get into the weeds or the details about how I'm actually doing it or what tools I'm using so making this video to wrap up the final few slides would actually have a lot of information and show you basically how I'm using my other website and my email list and some extent Facebook to build my reader funnel come and to get more books to hopefully sorry get more readers to hopefully buy my books so I'll skim through what I covered really quick as a recap this is the stuff that all others have challenges with and the real problem is usually they're not properly communicating value which is almost always the cover in the blurb but if you're covering the blurb is already really strong and you already have enough reviews but the options are to pay for ads which can be competitive and are expensive or you can go drone platform and this is what I'm going to be talking about it's free but it takes some work and effort however you can set it up pretty quickly and it can work for quite some time a lot of authors already have the basics in place they have an author website an email list but they're not focusing on the relationship that they're building with the readers or their brand which means how someone feels when they think about you and you can do that deliberately by sharing the right kind of pictures and stories because pictures and stories are what make people remember things and also feel things with all of your content in different ways you want to be focused on these four things they want to be emotionally relevant why should they care but not just the details not just this is what you will get but also the stories and the pictures that make them feel things and there are shortcuts to this which will kind of show you how using them on my website so it has to be relevant to them has to be about things that they want or like already you can't really train or teach people to like things but you can tap into the things that they already like and you can explain why they will also like your thing you also want to build a rapport which is pretty simple also just basically being yourself assuming that other people like you will gravitate gravitate towards people like them so share things that you like and you're interested in as long as you've done your research and you're sure that your readers also like and are interested in those same things and then you have to show up so most people will ignore your message the first 7 times you have to assume when they download your ebook they're probably not going to read it they're probably not opening most of your emails so you have to try to build a relationship and you have to try to get them to start reading your writing and some of the way that you can do that it's just repeated exposure just by continuing to offer them the same things in different ways telling different stories trying to engage them and maybe making the same picture offer multiple times maybe the first 5 emails at the bottom you just say you know have you read the book yet here's some reviews go click the link to leave a review if you want things like that and then engagement you want to ask questions and ask them to take action but you want them to make micro commitments which means don't ask them for anything really hard I send for the simplest easiest thing there's a trick in sales marketing and sales tactics where they try to get you to say yes as much as possible so you ask a lot of questions where you know the answer is yes like do you like books yes do you like science fiction yes do you like aliens yes and then would you like a free book of my free sci-fi alien whatever so by getting them to say yes with questions that you know the answer to already you can lead them to continue the pattern and keep saying yes most readers are only looking for free stuff or they're looking for books or content they don't actually want to know who you are at the beginning so you kind of have to sneak in the information about yourself in there in a way that doesn't feel tacked on or spammy and is also related directly to the story that you're offering one of the ways you can do that is by including author's note at the back of your book where you directly say we'll talk about story a little bit later but basically this is why I wrote the book here's the story of me writing the book has to be an emotional story that makes you personable unlikable and also kind of ties in with the book of the story that you've written so it's a way to tie the content they've already read to you as an author before you make your call to action which is usually an opt-in offer for bonus material someone has today a good question I didn't get a chance to answer about could you use links inside the book for stuff like extra material maps or pictures or things like that you don't want to interrupt the story but that might be a good thing to offer as an opt-in bonus at the back like hey if you like this story I made this awesome illustration or I got an artist to make some pictures or here's my mood board that I was using when I was writing the book stuff like that's pretty good bonus contact they may not necessarily sign up to get it but they would at least click over to your website come and check it out so while they're on your website if you have a strong call to action it's laid out the right way they might sign up for something extra these are the basics I'm going to be talking about which is just the author website email list the email sequence and the opt-in offer you'll probably want to test different option offers don't just make one freebie and assume that it's a good offer for your audience you might have to test a few and also you can't just put up something for free that's not good enough there's tons of authors who have three books if it has an amazing cover even if it has an amazing cover which it should and by amazing I mean it's attractive to your audience and it's very clear and obvious what type of book it is even if it's a really pretty or beautiful cover it may not actually be enough because it's not communicating the genre enough you have to assume that you also need to provide a little bit of extra information to make them want to read the book which could be your blurb or your hook or a couple reviews just a sentence or two your strongest stuff that makes them want to in combination with the cover is enough to make them want the book if they don't want the book they're not gonna sign up for anything now let me talk about the other three in the next few slides and we're gonna try to focus on does it work is it measurable what's the point that's easier to do online which is why I am a big fan of reader funnels which just means you build online automated website funnel so that all of this stuff is just working in the background people find you they sign up they go through email sequence and they buy books without you having to initiate any discussion with any particular person it will feel like you're directly you know trying to sell your book to somebody however you also want to focus on more than just the numbers you want to be really focusing on making your readers or potential readers feel a certain way because if you can get them to feel something and remember something or tell a story so that we remember or feel something relevant to you there's a greater likelihood that they'll become fans and there's a great power in having actual fans is the difference between coal traffic and warm traffic so trying to sell or pitch your book to a stranger will always have much lower conversion whereas if there are already fans they already kind of know who you are even if they have never read your work if they kind of recognize your name or your face or have read some of your stories or emails there's a greater likelihood that eventually they will take action even if it's down the road which is also why you don't want to just give up too early or have a too short others on your sequence because it may take quite a while for them to finally take notice of you so for general list building I'll kind of touch on this slide even though I won't really talk about what's on this page I am a big fan of giveaway so you for example take out ten new releases that you know we're coming out in the next few months that your audience is already hungry to read by famous authors in your John rrah and you just say I'm gonna buy those ten paperbacks because I like them and I wants for the authors and I'm gonna give them away for free you can sign up on King sumo King sumo as a giveaway platform that I recommend because it's pretty good and they can sign up to win and then they can get extra entries for sharing so if we can get one person to sign up they might share with five of their friends and after they sign up there's also the option to do other things so they could follow you on social media or do other things for you to win extra entries and have more of a chance to winning so that might cost like 100 bucks to buy the books and that's a really powerful lead generation strategy or getting more people on your list all you're doing is they're not fans yet they're just people who like to read the kind of that you like if you can get them on a list and offer them a free book they could become fans I keep two lists I keep a list of people who have signed up for free stuff or people who signed up for giveaways and then I have a list of real fans that's only accessible from the back of my book so after I know they've finished a book they set up to that list and then along my like real fence list i generally send the same kind of content to both of them also new releases to everybody but I know that those are my real fans that have actually read my writing the other thing you can do is you can have a free book on your website but if you're not getting your traffic doesn't really do anything so I suggest also putting the free book offer in book funnel or insta freebie which are two places that make it easier for you to give away books and have people download them and both platforms it's a freebie a book funnel have also started organizing group promotions that you can start your own group promotion so this is one that I sell fantasy weight about 100 authors join so that means a hundred authors are sending the same page and the page just features a hundred book covers and they're all free and readers can go through and signup what's gonna happen is they're gonna sign up to a lot of them which means they're gonna get a whole bunch of emails from a whole bunch of authors and they're probably gonna unsubscribe to all of them so it's not super effective but there is a lot of power in numbers and also in controlling that platform instead of just putting up a free book in somebody else's giveaway if you are the organizer you can have a little bit more flow so I was able to put several of my books in the giveaway I also put up $100 Amazon giftcard giveaway and I put a Facebook pixel so I could retarget all the people who went to the giveaway and I also can reach out to these authors directly so I recommended for example that all the author's to join the giveaway also post a blog post linking back to my site and I said that I would also aggregate their sites or their freebie Oliver link and put them on my website it's really great for Google and for SEO to see that you have a lot of relevant links between similar platforms or blogs it makes it easier for Google to know what's on your site who you are who's linking to you so that they can decide what kind of traffic to send you so it's really powerful strategy that I don't think many people use even if you have an ugly website that is getting your traffic there's power from links especially if you have an older domain um there are tools you can use to check out your site Authority or basically you're like how much power your blog or website has it's not a huge deal except like I would love to get a link from someone with a high authority site even if it doesn't get very much traffic whereas if someone has a new blog that doesn't have any traffic or any site Authority it's not really worth it for me to try to get links from them they may still have a big platform or an email list but in terms of like the strength of your blog or website it's worth a while it's a worthwhile indicator of how many people are linking to you which is a worthwhile indicator of how good is your content if you have really good content which isn't just you know talking about yourself and talking about your books but talking about things that your readers are interested in and providing useful value and to some extent but it's a little dangerous talking about controversial issues I mentioned earlier today that you want to talk about things you like or hate because that will easily get people to sympathize with you if they like or hate the same things however you want to be really sure that that your topic isn't too controversial there's real controversy and there's kind of false controversy so I could say I'm a cat person and not a dog person I like diet coke rather than I don't know Fanta or something like there are little things that some people have strong opinions about but aren't really like their core true self or whatever if you start to talk about religion or politics that can be dangerous it might be on brand for you but it's also something like you don't want to intentionally be controversial just to be controversial but if you write a post for example one of my posts is a letter to bookbub telling them why I'm breaking up with them and it's kind of like a letter to a lover who left you and I say something like you know you're always with other people you don't have time for me anymore I can't stay in this unhealthy relationship it was a really simple little blog post I don't got my attraction but I haven't really shared it either and some people are kind of starting to discover it and they think it's cool so stuff like that that's just like an interesting cool piece of content a lot of other authors identify with the pain and struggle of applying for book club ads and being rejected all the time so I'm basically putting a face on a feeling they already have in an interesting new unique way so it's something that they will probably identify with and agree with and feel things about and share because it hasn't been done before so it's kind of a interesting unique piece of content I'm gonna move on this is one of my blogs which I just set up as the why a book shop so with websites I've always said that it's better to have a John or specific site than an author site not everybody would agree with me but nobody's looking for Derek Murphy because I'm not that famous in fiction and I want people to search for relevant keywords and then read the stuff so it's more likely actually they will share good content from a blog that just looks like a John ruag or a fan page or something for readers rather than an author site like a personal author site because then it's an opinion and if you share it it means you're supporting the author so they if they don't know you very well or if they haven't read your books they may be reluctant to share your content if your book if your websites just all about yourself it's a small thing but I've chosen to do that on this site this is also I joined a blog which means I've made it possible for other young adult authors to sign up and post content so they could post their own book reviews they could post book launches if they want although most don't and the idea is that we can grow the blog much faster if a lot of different people are posting a lot of content which is still a good idea a lot of authors don't really understand the power of blogging so it's hard to get people to be involved and also I think authors are skeptical about writing for free or giving away free content but this side actually has quite a bit of traffic mmm five five or six hundred people a day and in there relevant traffic because they're people who are looking for all the key word posts that I've set up anyway so when I did that giveaway on loop funnel I changed my links in my sidebar and I something up on top which is called a banner and then this is also the pop-up so I have these three different points of the same content so they're likely to see the offer several times they're more likely to actually sign up and click something and this was the original one which wasn't very good it was even as I think there's also a problem with like if you were just giving away five one book or even if you're giving away five books it's not really numbers sake they don't want five books they want one good book and so thrilling dark fantasy isn't really what you should to have if you have popped an offer and you might as well have an exit intent pop-up this just means when they go to leave the site if they go on your site accidentally and don't know who you are they're gonna leave within five seconds or so but if they go to leave and they see a pop-up it won't convert very well but even if you get you know this is one point second a conversion if I get a thousand visitors a month it's still some people are not very many ten or something but it's on and you can try to improve that what I was gonna say is you really want one book one really good offer so one really good book with really clear benefits which means you have the review or the blurb of the tagline I wouldn't put like the full synopsis I might click I might say something like click here to read the first chapter or like if they're not ready to sign up I think probably if I did another pop-up like this if they're not ready to sign up right away I would say something like click here to read the first chapter so then they could either sign up to get the whole book or they could click to read the first chapter which may actually do a little bit better so to keep them on the site longer but in this pop-up I would have probably the hook and a review and the book cover because you have to give them more reasons like you have to make them interested in the actual book not just their here's a free book because they're probably sick of signing up for free stuff anyway but I signed up for this Papa I made it this pop-up instead which is working quite a bit better so this is you know three about three times the power this was a limited time promotion but and I haven't even fixed this it's like right now it's wasted because it's probably a dead language doesn't go anywhere but I would probably fix this and I may even keep something like a $100 gift card if you have enough contact you have enough books even just a $10 gift card that you give away every month and then you can just keep the same giveaway open and change the deadline every month or you can just say you know I give away a $10 gift card every month to my reader sign up here to win you do want to be careful I mentioned earlier about just giving away cash because you'll attract the wrong readers but if it's on your website and if only the right people are coming to your website because you have the right kind of content it might be okay I tend to only give away like cash grabs to my list but sometimes it's okay to build a big list and then try to hone it down into actual fans and because this pop-up was working pretty well I'll probably find a way to merge these two and see if I can keep some of this to giveaway so like as your main optic offer instead of giving away free book if you make your giveaway your main offer or you say like I give away ten three books a month and then you just every month you look at the top ten new releases in your john room and you just pick a winner and gift those ten ebooks directly to the winner it might cost you like 20 or 30 bucks a month and that would probably be a lot more successful as an opt-in offer than something like a free book so now I'm going to talk a little bit about what I'm doing on the Facebook I have a Facebook page and a Facebook group pages you can advertise from and it's easier to get likes but groups are have a lot more engagement and one things you can do with groups is ask questions so what I had done is made a Facebook page and then also made a group that was just for my art copies my advanced reader copies so in the group I can ask questions like you know who is to ignore fee or watch your favorite Rick Murphy book just to make sure they're real fans before they get into my art group because I don't want to give my free books to just anybody I mean I've kept that group small however because groups get so much more engagement now we're trying to push everybody over to the group so for example this is the pin post on my Facebook page and you just said you know three books join the group and there's a link straight to the group I have the same thing on the sidebar instead of just a description which is I mean I may not apply to you because you probably don't have the problem I have I have probably 10,000 people on my page and only 500 or something on my group so I'm trying to move all those people over which is why I've set it up this way but I do think like having a you know get the free book offer a really big night off your Facebook page it's probably pick a good idea this was also the banner I was using so you can customize the button on the top of your Facebook page I made mine go straight to my opt-in page and then I just added this little thing this is just one big banner and in the banner it says free books and there's a big bright arrow so that if people come to mcvish page for whatever reasons I didn't want to make sure I'm trying to get them on my list as well once they're in my group I have an announcement that looks like this and the idea of all of this was to try to get them to actually review the book so I set some rules and expectations I told them what's gonna happen and how we're gonna be releasing books what we also tried to do because on book funnel you can use something that's like an automated email campaign that's separate so you can set up you can put an email list so you already have of your arc readers and copy pasted it into a book funnel so that they will get I think it's three emails so the first email is like here's the book it's available the middle email which is a few days later says like have you read the book yet you're we're gonna hope that you review it on this state this is the date it's gonna be out and then the third email is like the book is live go post your review so it's kind of nice because you don't have to follow up with everybody or your full list it's only the people who have gotten the art copy if you do our copies I generally give I mean I've given out 500 copies before but I have trouble even giving away 500 copies of my art book and ideally you would just have a hundred really active arc readers who are more likely to leave reviews so we basically tried to add engagement and I'm down here I say you know after you've got it please leave comment or like the supposed to make sure that you've read it I stressed that it's kind of urgent I didn't some pictures there are some we actually made a few mistakes and so I'll talk about what those are we were trying to it's it's frustrating to give out free copies and they don't review it so we are just trying to add some accountability and try to make sure that the people on our arc list that are getting the art copies are actually going to leave reviews um however you can't ask people for a positive review you can't even steer them in a direction like I usually say if you like the book I hope you will review the book so that's kind of conditional already because if they didn't like the book then hopefully they won't review the book it's implied but I can't say please give this a good rating or I hope you you know give it a five star rating whatever you can ask or you can't steer them in a certain directions you have to be careful about that language now you also can't suggest you're removing active readers which is what I had done originally I said something like we only want to give our copies to people who are reading the book so if you I mean I know you're busy if you're already on a lot a lot of our readers if you don't have time to review the books we will remove you from this group so that you're not getting the book that's what we it said originally which is completely rational but it's against Amazon's terms because you can't have a membership that's dependent on leaving reviews like the price of joining or being included in the member site is reviewing the books it says it in the term so I had to remove that part to make sure that I wasn't breaking those rules um you also can't ask for an Amazon account so that we could check the reviews that you posted I know it's pretty common for readers and authors to like you they send you the link of the review so you can check that they've reviewed the book but technically it's against the rules to ask them for more personal details or to post a review or things like that seems to be a little bit careful a lot of people do it it's probably not a huge ID a big deal I have to be a little more careful because people watch what I'm doing and if I accidentally break the rules they'll tell me about it real quick so I'm actually on Facebook right now I've got a lot of chats down here from a bunch of you but I want to show you real quick what it actually looks like in real time this is actually you can put videos in the top of your page on em on Facebook so this is just an animated book cover basically that I cropped and made a video of for the top of my page it's kind of cool if you're doing new releases I've seen a lot of other authors post a banner like they'll change their banner for every release so every time they release a look thought the banner with maybe a review and maybe the publishing date which I should have done but I also just think it's really cool to feature the art this art I've actually completely changed because it wasn't hitting the genre hard enough but it I still liked it a lot and it's pretty so I put it up there and it's just kind of cool because it's a visual video it doesn't really like what I should have done if I do a new release is it doesn't have to be animated but I'd have a new release banner or a coming soon banner and then the button would go I think you can add a link so I would add a link straight to the pre-order or straight to the book and then this whole banner would say like the book is coming soon here are the dates and then the button would be relevant to this offer or whatever I think that's a really good idea to change your page header depending on your new releases I'm not that organized so I probably won't do it but you should do it if that appeals to you and the other thing you can do is you can link pages and groups so on this page in the sidebar over here I can go straight to groups there's also been some cool features on Facebook like a course so you can add like a series of videos which i don't know how you could use this fiction but you could probably go it away I haven't really tried the shop category but you could I think add all of your books into a shop with more details and links so like when they're on your page I could check out your shop and look at all the books and reviews and stuff and then click over to Amazon to buy think that's possible but you can also have groups that are tied to your Facebook page so here's just in the description there's a link that goes over to the group that I actually want them to join along with a couple links to my main web sites and I think over to the group this is the review team and if I wasn't already member it would ask me some questions first to kind of make sure I was a real reader like I said we may change this because the page has just about 10,000 people this has 561 members but because groups get more engagement like you want a page for advertising I don't think you can run ads from a group yet the one page for advertising but you get much more engagement from a group so it's kind of tricky but if you're gonna get people to follow you you really want to try to be building a group because then when you post content people will see it probably my page I have 10,000 people if I post something maybe 50 people maybe a hundred people will see if I post on meme actually be interesting to go back and just show you what is successful if I post a link to a book or like you know new release buy my book or whatever I get very little visibility this is just a meme that I posted recently it's up to 3,000 people I get sometimes 10,000 or more views and shares with a simple meme so I do that often to get engagement however the assumption would be if it used to be if you go a lot of engagement sometimes Facebook would keep showing you you're opposed to other people so like if I kept the engagement high with memes then when I post a new release people would also see it but that's not actually the case I'll get 10,000 views on a meme and then 50 views on that you released which is tricky so one of the ways around it and a really good suggestion I heard this weekend was if you're gonna post link go down and find a young here's another just meme that I posted which is kind of just a nice sentiment I just post things that I think my audience will like these I like interestingly believe this one didn't do so well so it's kind of funny this one I was asking for feedback on covers which is a good thing to do even just because it gets more engagement more engagement than usual but not actually much but like my new release this was just the blurb and it's out now and whatever it's three people's that's pretty bad and I have a link in here and I have a call to action here I heard from someone that what you should really do is have the link in the comments and instead of saying link in the comments or whatever you would actually have the image and in the image it would say link to the comments because then face would be would be less likely to be price said Facebook doesn't like you to send traffic outside of Facebook so they won't show you they won't show your content to your followers if you're trying to get them to go outside of Facebook just kind of sucks but so one way around it is to you know put your call-to-action or the link down in the comments and then just make that what you do and people get used to it it's a little tricky but the main problem is that pages just don't get enough reach which is why groups are generally better so in my group I have my announcement which just says all the rules and I mentioned this earlier but I didn't really explain clearly I have a link to a Google Form that puts them on an email list so they're in my group it's not my main email list it's just my orc list so it's just people who agree and this was a problem I had because basically if I sign up for this it means I'm gonna give them all my new releases and I would rather have had it be possible so that I could send them a link to book funnel if they want the book and then they could sign up for that book and then they would get those three emails from book funnel and book funds not set up like that which is I think it's a problem so I can't really do something specific for each book I have to just get people on an email list I can probably actually show you that on book funnel so this is what book funnel looks like this is one of the books that I've already got on there I've already added to cover the ePub the mobi files and then I can create a download page that will or will not collect emails I generally don't collect emails because I only give arcs to people who are already on my email list I don't need their email again unless you try to do something like I've seen people Facebook advertise straight to a book funnel link to get them to sign up to to build your list so that's a possibility I just want them to download the book as quickly as possible and then inside the book I'll have the link to Amazon you can do things in the book that you give away on book funnel that you couldn't do on the real book on Amazon but I could have like a message in the front or the back of the book saying this is the release date here's the link to Amazon when you finish the book please go review it stuff like that so I would have a download page that doesn't collect emails which looks something like this this again was a comfort that I liked a lot which doesn't hit the genre that I was shooting for so unfortunately we changed it to something that I think will convert better which we're testing but someday I'd like to go back to this cover of war I'd like to put this out inside the book or something like that just because but anyway this is a basic download they say get my book and it tells them it makes it really easy for people to download your book so that you don't have to you know handle customers or readers and explain things and fix things for that if it's not working so that's why book funnel is good but they have this feature that certified mail campaigns planes that have a certified mail campaign for this specific book and I can customize the emails a little bit but the basic emails will be like huge your free book here like are you reading how is it going and then I hope you liked it please leave a review and it just all goes out automatically however the way this works is you have to copy paste an email list there's not an option to for example opt in on this download page and then automatically get those emails there should be but there isn't so what you have to do is manually import your emails for people who have signed up to get your work releases and put them in here so you could do something like a unique google form for every release but that's kind of a penny ass so all we've done is have won some Google farm which looks something like this where they answer a couple questions this is actually a lot more information I would probably simplify this and just make it as simple as possible and basically ask for an email like the more information you'll qualify the readers better but your conversion will be down the more hoops they have to jump through in your form the less likely they're gonna actually fill it out and complete the form so I would simplify it but anyway that's kind of how I'm using Facebook right now it's not really my best strategy also we do a lot of Facebook guys but that's a whole other thing that I won't get into okay so now I'm going to talk about blogging and websites and designing the author website and how to put your website together and things like that if you don't know what to blog about which is a common thing for most authors here are some ideas you want to be talking about books and not just your books you want to be talking about other books in your John rrah you want be talking about the new releases every month if you can this is suddenly it's really easy to outsource you could just pay pay someone on Fiverr KVA to like look for all their new releases every month in your John rrah and post a blog post on your on your blog that might cost 20 bucks 250 bucks per blog post you do it once a month like best young adult fantasy books of September 2018 or something that's really good content most people don't do it because Fanny asked but it's an easy thing to do that you could outsource pretty cheap actually yeah so don't just talk about your books talk about books in general other people's books on issues if you really tapped into the market a lot of different genres have hot buttons or like sci-fi fantasy readers probably love or hate you know the newest Marvel movie or Star Wars movie or would ever talk about those things those controversies pick up on you know what's trending you can also up like google alerts for what's trending but if you're kind of plugged in on Facebook if you have friends in your John which you probably do you'll kind of notice like what's going on and then you can just find a way to summarize the discussion in an interesting way and talk about it not all the time but maybe once a month even if you have a good one every couple of months it's kind of a good habit to get into so that you're talking about the industry become recognized as you know someone who knows what's going on but also people are going to be searching for that stuff so if you are talking about this up on a blog you might show up it's hard for something like you know if it's like a Star Wars movie review there's millions of other blogs already doing that but if it's the top sci-fi books that have dragons or something really specific you might be the only person so if somebody searches for that you know maybe they're looking for that and there are some out there and I am writing one so if you want to blog about sci-fi books with dragons Space Odyssey where dragons asked me to feature my book and I will send you the link you also want to be telling stories which are more vulnerable shares like a good story you want to be immediate you want to be present you want to be describing the scene because you're putting pictures in people's heads but you also want a towel about something emotional it doesn't have to be like a sob story but some emotional moment you had that it made an impact on you it's a good story it'll impact that also hopefully you can tie that in with an actual book that you've written so I'd probably have a story introduction for each book that I want to launch and it's kind of you have to test like I could send out the first chapter or the first page and test that against you know one time when I was seven I met the Easter Bunny which is a true story you can ask me about some time and I'll tell you about that you also could just talk about your favorite things or the things you don't like like earlier this is a really good content to have in your initial autoresponder series talk about your favorite things or your favorite books especially because you want to strengthen your also box as quickly as possible so when people set up your books if you say here are my favorite books and you send them to that link and they buy some of those that will also help your also so it's a good thing to do and then giveaways like I said you just giveaways often I think not just you know once a year although do what you're comfortable with it's also a really easy thing to do to support other authors if you have you know friends who have new releases you can just say I'm gonna give away Craig does this all the time in the 20 books group but he just says I'm gonna give away 10 copies of this book to support that author which is a nice thing to do and people like giveaways they also do a lot of Amazon giveaway so that people follow you on Amazon which is also a good thing to do it's a different kind of giveaway but in general it's good to be thinking about you know what can I give away to my audience that will increase engagement the value of blogging specifically is that especially in fiction you may be the only person writing about the thing so best magic Academy get ye books I'm not the only person who's written about this there are several but because my blog has a lot more site Authority I show up first in Google and I show up first in Google for most other young adult searches they might search for like best mermaid books best vampire books best werewolf books I'll usually be on the first page of Google for most of those things this is also something I outsource this is the blog I mentioned before these links are outdated I need update them which is stupid but I don't have time to do everything and I have a VA who does a lot of this stuff for me so every month shall polish top 10 fantasy roommates novels for the summer things like that best way audiobooks was one we did recently which is really cool and actually this like if I got a lot of traffic on this link which I probably will I would have the added advantage of sending them to audible and getting a bounty so if I got you know a thousand visitors a month to my blog and ten of them signed up for audio book for audible I'd get a bounty for every person who signed up which is some extra money so that's also kind of a nice thing there's not so many things that you can do with fiction but you want to be boosting your income as much as possible to cover your costs so things like recommending that a few books aren't given along you should always be pushing Kindle unlimited you can get a bounty for people signing up for Kindle unlimited so you can just say to your list like it on the footer of every email hey all my books are inconel unlimited sign up here get a special discount or whatever because if some people are signing up for get unlimited through your link you'll be earning extra money that way which can help help with all of your costs I also have a link over here I just have best books for teens which is something I rank pretty well for and I just aggregated all of the best books for teens posts that we have so that's mermaid books but steampunk books best Victorian y-a novels I've just done a lot of these which is why in part we rank really well if you just do one of these it's gonna be harder to rank but if you do a whole bunch of them consistently over time it's gonna become easier and easier for you to rank things this one I should actually change the date because I could just change this day to 2019 so it's relevant or take the date off some people are searching for the date so like it can help if they see this in the search results they would click it but not if it's two years old so you want to update it or take the date off um yeah but so far I've only shown you the why a shelf which is the joint author genre specific blog I created so I'm gonna talk a little bit about what I did for my author name when I started writing fiction which is urban epics and again I didn't brand it around my name I brand it around the topic so I have my main two keywords my write fantasy it's alright urban fantasy and epic fantasy and I have both the keywords here I have a little tagline down here this is the new design so I'm going to talk about what I used what I'm using right now I'm testing out right now for the first like three or four years I just used a simple clean WordPress site and if you search for like best WordPress sites for authors you'll probably find my list on creative Indicom which is just like a hundred different WordPress themes that are okay but keep it really simple keep it white plain that's what I've always said in the past because it's easy you don't waste too much time trying to mess around with your website because you'll probably change it all anyway you're probably mistakes the most important thing is to have basically the right content so you can do a lot of this stuff that I'm talking about even on a pretty basic site however because I'm really focused on branding right now if they only land on my website once I want to make sure I'm having the strongest emotional impact as possible so if you should have a clean simple WordPress website I used to say like the best thing on your covers on your what the best thing on your website should be your book cover because if you have a lot of other graphics and crap on your website your book cover won't stand out it'll get drowned out in noise so you want to keep it really clean and simple and you want really good covers to feature however you also there's a there's a big advantage to having someone land on your site and thinking wow this site looks cool I'm attracted to this stuff maybe I'll stick around for five more seconds and look at something I think there's an advantage of that it'll keep people on the page longer so I read this on the website I used Divi theme which is a wordpress theme that's drag-and-drop so you have a lot more customization options you can really make whatever you want which is kind of a danger because you don't want to make whatever you want you want to just get the template that works and use it so you don't know all the time there are some author templates that are that are fine basically and look okay but I'm going to show you some different options that you can do with Divi that I think are really cool and discuss you know what I'm trying and what what's working or not working so firstly I have this beautiful background out art and it's a little bit too sci-fi probably but kind of I like it a lot it has kind of mood that I want you want to be careful about images because you can't just use any images on your website you probably want to I don't buy stock photos for all of my images but there are free sites where you can get cool images for free that you can use on your website so I try to use that a lot especially for the type of stuff I put on my site which is really like emotive portrait stuff which I'll show you some love you can use it for free and it gets the right emotion or you can use your own stuff which I think I like a lot a little bit about later but you can use your own pictures on your blog and stuff what you should do for life updates and things like that in this case I bought the art for a book cover but I didn't use it as a book cover just because you buy book cover art doesn't mean you can use it for your website or for your banner most designers are ok with it but not all you probably won't ask for permission and you can't just take some water and use it on your website sometimes it's okay with attribution that's generally true but not always true so if you found something really cool and you find out who the original sources and you probably you properly cite the source and you link back to the original post that's generally okay but I'm not a lawyer and some people disagree and you should be careful but as long as you find as long as you link biker and you credit the source it's generally okay I don't think I've done that as well as I should have but I think I told you the off the the name of the artist is Marilla Santana she's really good and I love her work so I'm featuring it on my website mom I have bought it but I didn't necessarily buy it for this purpose so I still want to give her credit and I have to make sure I add the links in somewhere on my website that says you know the cover art was made by now I also made this logo this was just a stock image you know from a stock photo site that I made into a logo with simple tags from a website this is my current homepage which the idea of is just to have a really big emotive impact so I get the genre I have a little tagline dark fantasy tragic romance an epic adventure it's not great but it's clear on the keywords so they know what they're gonna get and I have this big button that says start reading I actually should test start reading for free because I think that would work a lot better and the idea was they could click this button and go straight to another page which just has a whole bunch of excerpts because I want them to start reading the fiction before anything else that was my goal which may not necessarily be working out as well as I want so I'm gonna have some other things up here in the menu I'll have a link to the free book this doesn't necessarily work that well either because as I said a free book isn't strong enough offer so in the menu it might get some flakes but if they haven't already like they already don't know who you are they have read your books it's still hard to get them to read a free book just because it's free you still need to take them to a landing page which really sells the book even if it's a free book also I've kept this the menu really simple I have a link to the blog I have our books which I haven't even really set up yet I don't think I'm having about page which I'll show you it's okay and a home page you want to keep your money really short I think 5 links is the max maybe 6 promises if you have too many links it's gonna break especially on mobile DV also does this really cool thing I haven't done it I haven't used it that well but you can click back and forth to preview how it's gonna look on mobile or tablet or phone or your PC to make sure that it's gonna look okay but because if you've just designed for if you just design your website for for PC something like 60 or 70 percent of your traffic isn't gonna see a broken website so obviously that's no good you want to try to make sure you have they call it a responsive website and you can buy a WordPress site that's responsive and it should kind of look okay but Divi has a feature where you can actually see how it's really gonna look which is kind of useful then you can adjust it so that it looks pretty good everywhere so if they click on this start reading button there's also this button where they can go down the page and see other things if they click the start reading then they'll go to this page which I also set up in Divi it's a feature which is tabs or something so I have five different books from the co-authored pen name that I'm trying to launch says choose-your-own-adventure this font might be a little too hard to read so I might using the font because I like it and it's it hits a I think it's good to have a font that you use everywhere you'll see this is basically a guide for simple serif font and then at all Center bold font for headings and then I have like one script font which might be a little too unreadable you you want to you tokay to have some style you don't have than one fancy fun it's kind of fun to put a fancy bow on your website but it should also be readable so that might be a problem then on each of these tabs I'll actually show you how it works so this is kind of what it looks like I could scroll down I'll show you what the home page looks like I guess now this isn't really updated and actually Amazon doesn't like you using their logo on your website we found out recently because when we applied for an Amazon Associates account they wouldn't approve our website because we were using their logo in a way that they think is off-brand so even though like this might be totally fine I wouldn't necessarily say don't do this because unless you're applying for an associate account doesn't really matter I think it is good to let readers know where they're going like go to Amazon buy the book or whatever I like to have you know get the book or reach after one for free this is the animated book cover that I made it's kind of fun it loads slowly the problem with this kind of site is it's really graphic heavy which means it's a little slow to load which is definitely a problem I need to try to minimize all my images as much as possible and maybe make my homepage simpler because if it loads too slowly Google's gonna stop sending me as much traffic which can be a problem on the other hand like I said if it's really cool and people really like it this is also the kind of site like Dean Koons or Lauren Kate like really big famous authors with good web sites have his gunsight there's also a lot of famous authors like Suzanne Collins Hunger Games author who has who did have the worst website in the world and she's updated it to like a poor lower mediocre website that still better than what you had before which is too bad because you know with all that sale she really should have invest good website anyway I have a new release big feature on top I have some reviews I probably have too many reviews then I have new releases read more about which goes to our most popular books or learn more about our writers which goes our about page and then join our review team or subscribe by email and I have another opt-in box some social media links these are just memes and pretty pictures so they serve no purpose other than to make my readers feel good I use a lot of Adam bird photography because he's makes this amazing art that I love so I also just had some other art they pull off stock in most stock sites or free picture sites and then a couple memes that I know are gonna relate these are like three really good memes that are gonna relate to my audience also paper furies kind of famous for young adult and Victoria Schwab is a huge author and young adult so fans of young adult who see these names it's a little bit of brand transference where like they see me sharing content they know that I also follow these people it's a little bit of symbiotic or something like that between me and the readers that we both follow the same people and like the same people it's a simple thing I have more book reviews and I asked people to leave for book reviews because they're important I don't picture of a girl in a cat because cats are awesome another really pretty picture that might appeal to people who like my books more reviews more reviews not a pretty picture like I said surely graphic heavy I'm gonna have to first chapter excerpts just on my home page it's a sneak peak of two books and I would probably try to keep these updated for whatever I'm I'm pushing and it's just the first few paragraphs of the story and they're links to the full chapter of the first book on that page it's just a blog post but on that page there's a link to actually go and get the book and at the bottom I have today's deals which need to be updated but basically all my Nonna's it bucks or whatever I'm running for $0.99 or what I should have done and I don't I often do you know 99 problems for my author friends or at least swaps so it would be an added bonus if added their list swap link here while like for the week around their promotion that would just be nice it also give me a good content it also helped with my also box because like I said if you're promoting diners and deals from other books in your John rrah and people buy those that's great for you because it'll help strengthen your also BOTS as well and that more reviews in the end and then a huge sign up banner at the bottom with something pretty specific I thought this was all a good idea I thought this would work really really well I haven't really seen the extra options or conversions that I was hoping for if the amount of traffic that I get probably there's too much information probably I should simplify the homepage and have mostly a more specific call to action like if I was just focus on the opt-ins it would be like free book sell the book sign up for the book and basically nothing else and so maybe some other stuff in the menu so my test that later and I'm actually going to show you some examples of what that looks like so this is a more standard blog header where I have instead of that read more button and nothing else I would have sign up for new releases sign up my social media links sometimes people just want to sign up or they want to contact you right away I might even have like your contact this also has a menu up here I don't have a contact I have on the about page there's a way to contact us and a forum and stuff but I don't really want people contacting me and I don't think most readers are gonna recharge the author anyway so it's kind of a waste of space to have a contact link up on top however if somebody looks up your website because they want to get in touch then it's kind of frustrating not to have a way to reach you so some people might care I don't think it's a big deal so this will probably work better and then just have my featured new releases right at the top this was another version which is also a really good idea just to whatever you're releasing to have a really big banner on top for that book they could link to I wouldn't us I mean download the book for free if you have a perma free book or if you have something like that so your banner could just be free book get your promo free book or could update your banner for each new release these are actually slide shares or slideshows sorry about that gap I had a technical issue but I was saying that this is a banner slideshow which just means I could feature my periphery then three of my new releases or seven of my new releases or whatever and they would just play I don't necessarily recommend slideshows because I think your slideshow is basically you have lots of content you're trying to just show them everything hoping that they like something and the probably not gonna stay around that long you want to really focus on your best converting offer and maybe your new release and just update your new release so maybe like two slideshows maybe three if like one slideshow was just like text like just chapter one or maybe just all your reviews or whatever you want to feature but I don't I think generally people trying to squeeze in a whole bunch of stuff in their slideshows and that doesn't work so well anyway so probably test these out because I think it's a good idea however the other thing that I can show you is you could make a landing page like this where if you really want them to opt-in you would just have the book cover background art a synopsis and a link a bunch of reviews like this is a landing page so this is just everything on this page is to get them to pay attention and to want this book really badly and to sign up to get it for free so it's a good idea like if most your traffic has come to your home page the danger of something like this is um if people come to your home page and they only see one book Google may not know what your blog is about you don't have enough text there's some other things with blogging I haven't talked about but things like when you're blogging in WordPress and you add an image you need to add keywords to the because Google can't process the image itself so they don't know what it is if you just have like an image happy site and not a lot of text Google won't know what your site's about and they won't send you any traffic but you can take your images with keywords and then you can also just make sure that you have some keywords on your homepage at least give John rocky words some reviews make sure you have some that stuff so that Google knows who you are but a page like this would definitely convert a lot better so people landed on this page and I have like free book and there was the blurb and the reviews and this great art and a sign up banner this is kind of ugly somehow better done here so I don't want to clean up a little but it's functional um this type of page would work a lot better so I might test just putting something like that on the home page because you know you want to capture as much as your traffic as possible I get something like five hundred two thousand hits a day on my website and I only get I don't know 20 or something opt-ins a day which is pretty poor conversion I'd love to get up to 100 opt-ins day a day with my current traffic so I probably need something like this would you probably convert it you know 20 or 30 percent as opposed to all my other stuff which is kind of subtle like all my website content is about other stuff and then you know if they look in the menu if they look at the sidebar if they click this link they can go to the opt-in offer and they go maybe go to this page but not everybody will click that link or see the opt-in offer so it's a kind of same kind of thing with your book they may download your book but they may not read your book they may not have read your book so I'm gonna talk about this a little bit more later but you don't want to save the important stuff for I'm contradicting myself as I say you don't want to save the important stuff for later and I told you I'm gonna do something later but the idea is you have to sneak in your most important contact content as soon as possible because most people even if they sign up they'll never read your emails they'll never read your book maybe not most but maybe 50% of people so you need to put your really Messaging before like immediately before they download the book or right after they download the book you need to have your most important messaging there that's the page they're gonna see for real that's the only like that's that the page is gonna get the most traffic that's gonna get the most scenes even make sure you use that page really really well which is what I'm gonna talk about later some of this stuff I already covered so I'm gonna skip through it this I already talked about this is a whole big thing I'm going to go through it kind of quickly because I'm already just passed the one hour mark on this video but this is about email list and what to email your list and this could be a whole thing but I recommend three months of content once a week which is twelve emails and blog posts I think I'm actually gonna extend this into you know a 12-point template to tell you exactly what to send it doesn't work if we also have the same things but of course you're getting completely customize it with your own books and your own stories but just as a general outline I think I'll make something like a 12-step program that you can begin with but these are some of the things that I'm doing so they sign up the first message is probably welcome did you get the free books here are you free but well I'd be welcome here's your free book the next email might be did you get your free book but that's kind of a waste of space a little bit so it also use that to tell his story so the author's note I talked about earlier which would be in the back of your book I would also put something like that in the beginning of your email autoresponder and I was actually gonna make a note which would be your hero's journey you kind of want to feature out of the stories that you're gonna tell with these twelve emails you probably want something like for personal short stories and shares for excerpts or featured content like featured books that you want them to read and then maybe something like general updates so actually if you did that you could just write you could skip a week basically and once you could be sending out you know a monthly updates you have to meet you know all the time what you should probably do is have them go through the entire welcome sequence first so you would try to sell them on all their but all your backwards stuff and focus on your branding and your relationship building really hard and get them to read your like core offers and your book ones and then once they're done with those Fremont's you'd boo them out to a broadcast list which you would just send them updates and new releases all the time that's what would be smart I don't necessarily do that I kind of just broadcast to everybody even if it drops the sequence which isn't the best way to do it but I'm messy I would also be doing the list swaps or like featuring other books even if you don't like I'm too disorganized organized with swaps is it stressful for me in the last release to try to organize I think we did like 20 blissful ops with people which just means it's one of the values of building your email list because it's not just to promote your books you can use it to help promote other people's books which is good for them and also good for your also box you want to be promoting other people's content but if it's been Lee asks you organize all that stuff you can just share people's books and it's still good for you if you just share finance NGOs it's good for you because readers like it and they might buy those books which will help your also box you could also mention to the other authors like hey I said out your book especially if you have if there's authors you don't know but you want to know you could just say casually like hey just let out your book to my list I really liked it I want my list to read it – or something like that it's a good way to start a relationship without asking for a favor without like asking or expecting them to reciprocate by putting them in your in putting your book in their email list as well eventually when you have a bigger list with some clout it is very strategic to deliberately set up dates with people and say oh I'll share your book on this date and you can jump up on this date so you can promote the right books during the launches that works really well it is really effective but it takes a lot of organization so if you launch a lot of books frequently those kind of setups kind of take too much work I would do it for a first book launch or try to more like a really big if you're doing the rapid release I would do a lot of live ups on book 1 to hit it as much as possible anyway but that's some of the content that I would share you want to share memes you want to be consistent you want a lot of personal interaction you want to add value so you're always thinking of how can I make this email the best email they get today how can I make them happy to read my emails or look forward to my emails what like maybe it's just something as simple as including a meme in every email which is something I should do I post some all the time on Facebook so I have a ton of them the other thing that works is over the loops which just means you mention something but you don't tell them everything so for example you see this on BuzzFeed all the time it's like 7 tips to lose weight you'll never believe number 3 now you have to find out what number 3 is so you click the link to find out stuff like that works especially I'm not going to talk about like email subject lines but it is really really important so you kind of want eyes how you eat most other subject lines to make sure they open because if they don't open it doesn't matter what you put your emails but even if they open your email you can say something like next week I'm going to send you like I just sent you this book next week I'm gonna send you another book but next week I'm going to tell you my top 100 books or whatever that's something else I have on my urban epic side I have like my favorite 100 bucks and I only add like when I read a really good book I read a lot by John Mayer so when I read a really good one I'll add it to that list but I don't just put you know whatever books on that the summary of this entire thing that I'm trying to do on branding I couldn't leave a better term than scene anchors this is actually something I talked a lot about in writing fiction where I have a book called the plot dot and the general idea is you want to deliberately craft a scene as if it's a painting so in your powerful emotional scene you want to have a color scheme or a color wash you want to describe the mood and you have like a flash or pop of color related to the tightness quest or challenge or journey probably some little momento from one of my books she wears all black she's very goth but she has a chunk of colored Legos that she wears as a necklace because she accidentally killed her kid brother when she was younger and her parents disowned her so she carries around this like really heavy emotional visual cue so when people think about my character the whole backstory and the whole motivation she wears that little pendant and as the books progressed she has to add one of the challenges she has to let go of something valuable for her so she lets go of that little colorful pendant to move forward and complete request so I like to that in my fiction but the thing with memory is that people will remember how you made them feel I'm gonna remember pictures a lot more than just words or information so you can dramatically simplify what you're trying to do instead of trying to write the best emails or whatever you could just email them a meme and like a one paragraph story that's interesting like meeting the Easter Bunny or getting abducted by aliens which is another story I can tell you sometimes if you ask me which is anyway the type of stuff you want talk about something that's really really easy to do if you just want to throw in some pictures either content I don't use Instagram well I only use it really to post life updates but I I don't like distinguish between fiction nonfiction but if people are interested in my life I update it not that often but you know whenever I'm someplace cool I might try to post a picture maybe a few times a week so what happens is I can go on to Instagram desktop and just look at my feed and I can just take a quick screenshot of six pictures I can just choose like a six picture picture layout that kind of represents what I've been doing the last couple weeks and take a snapshot and just put it in my email so really easy visual cue to quickly update your readers while also kind of hitting the branding because they're gonna see the pictures and they kind of associate you this was when we were in Lake Tahoe California and I think this was near crater-like so we were just driving around but I in love I grew up I was an Eagle Scout and I spent a lot of time camping so I don't do it anymore but I like people to imagine that I'm of an outdoorsman I can still light a one-match fire in the rain so I have some skills but I don't actually get out and camp very often and my wife doesn't really like nature very much at all so we don't do a lot of camping this is the Thank You page I showed earlier but it's actually only the first of three Thank You pages because I want to show you a couple things didn't really talk about Thank You pages um this is where most people would just say thanks goodbye like if you want to follow me here's my social media links here's my email I have a bit of an offer here which is follow me for three books which is okay but it's not strong enough of a call to action because I don't say what free books or what they're gonna learn I should say like if you want to sell more books or if you're having trouble finding an audience you know get my free guide to or whatever it should be a lot more specific and I should hit the pain point and the benefit that they're gonna get you can do that with fiction um one of the good ones I heard this weekend from someone I was having trouble with my young adult academy because it's not reversed Harim and a lot of people click on my ads because I haven't got any book but they're actually looking for a reverse harem so my ads aren't converting I'm getting the wrong traffic so I could distinguish my books by saying something like are you are you tired of reverse harem or do you love Academy books but tired of reverse and get my books so that way it screens out the wrong readers and pulls in the right reader so something simple like that but on your thank-you page instead of just instead of just saying goodbye basically thanks goodbye you want to tell them what's coming what's next you want to tell them something else they can do like please you know you could say follow me but it's not very powerful you really want to offer them some extra bonus I would probably say like thanks for signing up the free book is on your way to your inbox that's a whole different discussion whether you on the Thank You page you could actually just give them the book and they download it but the idea is you want them to actually go to their inbox to get the book to make sure that it's a real email that really on your list they double opt-in I don't think I'm doing that but I probably should be that there's that's a big discussion we could get into for various reasons but the ideas like on the one hand if you just give them the book they're gonna feel better about you it'll be like wow I signed up and he gave me the book right away that was so easy I feel so good I like this author a little bit better but so like you might gain more goodwill by doing it that way but generally you want them to actually go in their email and read your first email and that's where you're gonna you know start the loop and start telling them your stories and start telling them what they're gonna get the first email sequence I'll probably have to make a whole other video just about what to write in your emails which I'll do later but the first thing will should probably be like this is what I'm gonna send you over the next six weeks I'm gonna send you like if you keep opening my emails I'm gonna send you three more free books I'm gonna send you these are the things my the best books why a books whatever tell them what they're gonna get and and leave them let them look forward to something you might also for example mention maybe the first email you don't tell those stories but you have an open look you say something like you know that time somebody saw my dead grandfather's shoes and it pissed me off I'll tell you about that in my next email it's the interesting enough story it's a really emotionally charged story that I'm I think I tell him in one of my other responders but I'm not sure if I really do I also I have a lot of insecurities about my teeth because I have a lot of fake teeth and I had a lovely doctor in Taiwan who gave me a bunch of implants for free which is pretty amazing that's a vulnerable share I share I'm one of my newsletters because even though I'm uncomfortable about it it's kind of why I don't like smile a lot that's something that's very vulnerable and kind of makes people feel like they like me because I'm more personable I'm more like a normal person anyway things like that you want to be telling those stories but you can be referring or hinting at those stories to come just to incite curiosity so that they're more likely to actually open your future emails things like that I do in the first email oh my god a little bit off-track what I was gonna say on the thank you page you could just show beautiful pictures here just a couple of beautiful pictures that people will be like wow this is gorgeous I want to read this book I would probably use like a beautiful picture that relates to the book that they just downloaded or something but even just a couple things makes them feel good they might remember these pictures they might associate them with me or my branch or something which is okay it's one way to do it another way to do it would be to add a big picture of you as the author this is me being pretentious with an old typewriter in the Columbia Gorge Oregon it's a really cool place but if you are comfortable with it the most effective Thank You page is gonna be a video so here I just threw in a quick video this one I made at a burrow a couple days ago I put up on YouTube on YouTube you could see what I said but on your thank-you page you could have a bit of text but if you actually have a video saying thanks for signing up I just sent you the free book please go check your email I'm going to send you all these other cool things over the next few weeks and you could also you know go into a little bit of your writing story I'd probably keep it really short and just a minute or two but you want people to know your face and I know that can be hard as authors if you're not really comfortable showing you're you know putting your face out there it could be tricky especially you have a pen name so you don't always want to do this but it's very effective so if they sign up for free book like I said earlier they don't care about you they just want the book but if they see you talking about stuff and they watch you talking for a few minutes they will feel like they know you as a person and it's a lot easier to start building a relationship with them which is why it's really effective so the Thank You page focus on like that's what everyone's gonna see try to make your opt-in offer as big as possible and sell your opt-in offer to get as many opt-ins as possible but then everyone's gonna be on your Thank You page so that's very important for branding it's your first chance for a face-to-face conversation with your readers it's where you can let them know what they're gonna get why they should keep subscribed why don't you keep open your emails a little bit about your other like a very short introduction I write young adult fantasy about vampires mermaids and and whatever there are some like you could quickly do a few credibility boosters which means they don't really know you were trust you yet so if you can drop a few hints I mean it's a little lame to say you know your number one bestseller if you only hit number one for one day three years ago or something like that but you could say you know I just think you that this free book when it launched it was number one in dark fantasy it's a little thing but it's a little bit of social proof it's kind of proof that your your book is good I have over 500 reviews people are liking it I hope you like it too something like that and if you have other things like I've hit the Wall Street Journal and the USA Today bestseller a couple times been featured on C and then I have some accolades I don't talk about them I don't feature them I don't like to do that but it would be smart maybe not necessarily in my fiction stuff but in my nonfiction stuff you want to build trust as quickly as possible the other way to build trust would be to show pictures of you with famous people which is also kind of annoying I know when people do that it's also kind of uncool but I have a picture of me and in me and Mark Coker I've met Mark a few times since it founder of smash where he's a really cool guy I don't like I don't feel comfortable using the relationship to sell books kind of thing and nobody would know like a lobby wouldn't recognize marks face or Hugh Howey I make you how he in Taiwan so I picture with him it's kind of like that's the kind of thing I would put deeper in my autoresponder series where I might tell this story I went to earlier today I told the story about how I hid under the table at London Book Fair a young adult book on there was at London in London a few years ago my first card it was terrifying there were a lot of famous authors there and they're not really friends and they don't know who I am but I got some really good advice from them and I built a bunch of really good content like you know writing advice from 30 bestselling authors which is really good content I could put that in my autoresponder series I could tell this story about you know talking with Victoria Schwab and how she really influenced me and changed my career that's like it's good for the brand because if people like Victoria Schwab they will like that I also liked your choice well I'm not really saying you know we're friends or Apollo's or anything just that she was inspiring and I like for books and that can be enough so little things like that like just sharing mentors that you look up to or friends of yours people that you know we're like you do want to get a little careful like you don't want to just go around taking pictures of people and then sharing them to sell books but in certain sort of circumstances especially if you're telling a story as long as you're not like slandering or saying negative things about them it's generally okay I would be a little cautious about that that's probably like your comfort level and what you want you know to do but it is effective so just kind of keep that in mind as a closing I think this is about an hour an hour and 20 minutes long I hope you liked it I'm probably gonna turn all this stuff into a deeper course and I'm gonna make try to make I've been trying to make sense new years DV template so if you bought the Divi theme I could just make like a dummy homepage layout or books layout or about page layout and then just you could use that template to start your website quickly and it all be set up I think that's really exciting I would like to do that it's more complicated than I thought it was I haven't finished it yet but if you're interesting that you wanna hear more about it I have a Facebook group that's guerrilla publishing calm so you looking for me there I have a creativity page but I don't use it much because Facebook doesn't show anything anyway so the guerrilla publishing groups a lot more active and there's a guerrilla publishing a book on marketing that's pinned in that pin post with some other free books I don't lot of free content so I hope all the big content itself helps I had a really good time in Attleboro and I'm excited to be going to Vegas for the 20 books Vegas in November if you're not reading books group it's an amazing group so you might want to check that out as well 20 books a 50k thank you bye-bye

  3. Hey Derek, on ARCs and trying to stop people who don't review from claiming copies etc, there's a relatively recent site I came across recently called Booksprout. Worth checking out, they handle all the hard work for you and over time will filter out non-reviewers for you, based on the performance of your previous releases. So if 50 people claim a copy, but 20 of them don't leave reviews, those 20 won't be given the opportunity the next time you release (at your discretion).
