Congratulations SHIRLEY, Belladonna, Robert, Saretta & Shelagh! The Joint was jumping indeed on March 28, 2015 with CONJUNCTIONS: SHIRLEY & Belladonna!
SHIRLEY and Belladonna collaborated and created an incredible inter-disciplinary reading featuring Lorraine Currelley, executive director Poets Network & Exchange, Inc. poet educators Nzadi Keita and Jacqueline Jones LaMon and FHAK 2.0 Academy founder director Fakhair Spence.
It was my personal honor to share the podium with such a group of distinguished poets educators and activists. Jacqueline Jones LaMon shared passionate poems about her relationship with water and the stimulus for these poems. She read a heart wrenching poem about the Ferguson verdict and on a lighter note her humorous poetic sharing of Shonda Rimes programming. Nzadi Keita’s historical poems chronicling the life of Anna Murray Douglas, wife of abolitionist Frederick Douglas. Fakhair Spence’s presentation on his FHAK 2.0 Academy and community activism.
Shout out to all the great people (attendees) I met! Your kind words had a powerful impact. Thank you.
What you need to know about SHIRLEY and Belladonna.
SHIRLEY is at the intersection of a literary reading and a social movement. We’re at the corner where art meets activism. In our house, poetry shares a room with protest and there’s always a dance party going on. SHIRLEY is one where every ordinary detail is oriented toward the possibility of greater inclusion and awareness. Ideally it’s a space for its founders to question themselves and the various positions from which they create
Belladonna* knows this neighborhood well. Founded in 1999, Belladonna* is a pillar of the literary community, promoting the work of women writers who are adventurous, experimental, politically involved, multi-form, multicultural, multi-gendered, impossible to define, delicious to talk about, unpredictable and dangerous with language.
Please join me in celebrating the publishing of SHIRLEY Part of the Problem with yours truly Lorraine Currelley, Nzadi Keita, Jacqueline Jones LaMon and Fakhair Spence.
